Chapter One---Why Did Jesus Come to Earth?

Hi I am going to place a post for each chapter in the book. As you are reading at your own pace, feel free to add your comments to the chapter where you are. Everyone of us can view where we are and also what is being added by others where they are. I hope this format will work well for us. This post is for Chapter One of When Helping Hurts---Why Did Jesus Come to Earth?

  1. the initial thought--what is poverty? make a list of words that come to your mind when you think of poverty:
    margins------outside-----left out-----lacking
    needing-----hungry----wet----never rested----unfulfilled----someone else not me!

  2. The reference to Majority World --I found in the Preface if anyone else besides me had trouble with that term. It refers to Africa, Asia and Latin America page 1 of the preface.

  4. pg 41 struck me, "personal piety and formal worship are essential to the Crhistian life but they must lead to lives that "act justly and love mercy". I was also struck by the comment on pg 43 that "for His own glory God has chosen to reveal His kingdom in the place where the world, in al of its pride, would least expect it, among the foolish, the weak, the lowly and the despised. It is strange indeed to place the poor at the center of a strategy for expanding a kingdom, but history indicates that this unconventional strategy has acutaly been quite successful.
